The 2026 Junior Pan Pacific Championships were swum August 17 to 20 at the UBC Aquatic Centre in Vancouver, the first time Canada hosted the meet. The United States won the medal table with 23 gold and 51 medals, ahead of Japan (14 gold, 33 total) and Australia (2 gold, 22 total). Luka Mijatovic, 17, won five individual golds, from the 100 to the 1500 free. Canada won 4 medals, including gold for Ranumi Eashwarage, 17, in the 100 free (55.00).
For 13 to 18-year-olds on the U.S. and Canadian junior national teams, Junior Pan Pacs is one of the biggest international meets they can swim. For parents it is also the clearest picture of what "junior national team level" means in actual times, which is why we list every champion with their age below.

The swimmers to know
Luka Mijatovic (USA, 17, Pleasanton Seahawks) won every freestyle event from the 100 to the 1500. His range is the story: 49.53 in the 100 and 14:57.45 in the 1500 at the same meet. Less than three weeks earlier he had won the 400 free at the U.S. National Championships (3:43.45), against the senior field. We covered that meet in 2026 U.S. Nationals results.
Gabi Brito (USA, 16, Beach Cities Alpha) swept the sprints: 50 fly, 100 fly and 50 free.
Audrey Derivaux (USA, 17, Jersey Wahoos) won the 200 back and 200 IM and took silver in the 200 fly.
Zayda Miehl (USA, 16, Corvallis Aquatic Team) won the 1500 free (16:08.91), was second in the 800 and third in the 400.
Japan's sweeps: Toya Hirata (50 and 100 back), Yusei Imaizumi (50 and 100 breast), Michika Enomoto, 16 (50 and 100 fly), and Raito Numata (200 and 400 IM). Japan also won both medley relays that included boys.
Canada won four medals at home. Ranumi Eashwarage (University of Calgary Swim Club) won the 100 free in 55.00, just 0.07 ahead of American Aria Grossenbach. Lucy Wiens took silver in the 50 back (28.86). The boys' 4x200 free and girls' 4x100 free relays won bronze.

How swimmers make the team
This is the part most parents ask about. The two federations select very differently.
United States
Per the USA Swimming selection procedures:
- Age: 13 to 18 as of December 31, 2026.
- Selection meet: the 2026 Toyota National Championships (July 28 to August 1, Irvine). To swim there, a swimmer first needs that meet's qualifying time.
- How: the finish order in the 18 & Under finals at Nationals drives selection. When swimmers tie for a spot, it goes to a swim-off: the Nationals results book has one labeled "Jr Pan Pac Selection" in the boys' 100 free, won by Mike Rice, who then won bronze in the 100 fly in Vancouver.
- Team size: up to 20 boys and 20 girls.
- Not eligible: anyone selected for the senior Pan Pacs team.
So the path for an American swimmer is: make the national cut, get to Nationals, and place high in an 18 & Under final. Junior Nationals is the step before that, and our Junior Nationals 2026 guide explains how those cuts work.
Canada
Per the Swimming Canada selection criteria:
- Age: born 2008 to 2013.
- Selection meet: the 2026 Canadian Trials (July 5 to 9, Montreal).
- How: the two fastest eligible swimmers per Olympic event from the A final and the Junior final are ranked as a percentage of Swimming Canada's 2026 On Track Target Times, then selected in order. Later priorities fill relay spots and the rest of the roster.
- Team size: up to 40 swimmers.
- Not eligible: anyone who swam at the senior Pan Pacs.

What this means for your swimmer
